Our Orienteering Events
Rain or shine, Westmoreland Sanctuary partners with Hudson Valley twice a year to bring you a spring and fall orienteering meet. Orienteering combines the terrain of the outdoors with the thrill of a scavenger hunt. Navigate through Westmoreland’s woods, off-trail, using only a map and compass. Enter as an individual, family or group!![]()
Register ahead of time! Same-day registration is not guaranteed.
About Orienteering
Orienteering is a fun outdoor activity in which you run (or walk) a pre-determined course through the woods, by navigating to certain locations on your map using only a map and compass to guide you. These certain locations are called “control locations.” Once you reach the control location, you will use your “stick” (an electronic memory device) to record your time at that specific location. Your time is recorded at the end by a computer and a winner of the race is determined.
This can be as competitive as you want; from a nice relaxed stroll in the woods, to making your competitors eat your dust! It is enjoyed by kids, families, groups, individuals of all ages.
There are beginner classes throughout the meet and sticks are available to rent.
Families/groups only receive 1 stick, so if you would like to test your mettle separately, be sure to register as individuals!
Below is a video explaining how to navigate through the woods using only a map and a compass.
- Water bottle
- Sturdy, closed-toed shoes
- Compass (one can be provided)
- Food to enjoy afterwards!
