About Orienteering
Orienteering is a fun outdoor activity in which you run (or walk) a pre-determined course through the woods, by navigating to certain locations on your map using only a map and compass to guide you. These certain locations are called “control locations.” Once you reach the control location, you will use your “finger stick” (an electronic memory device) to record your time at that specific location. Your time is recorded at the end by a computer and a winner of the race is determined.
This can be as competitive as you want; from a nice relaxed stroll in the woods, to making your competitors eat your dust! It is enjoyed by kids, families, groups, and individuals of all ages.

Below is a video explaining how to get started. This information will also be taught in our Beginner's Classes!
There are beginner classes from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Maps will be provided. Compasses and Finger Sticks can be rented for free.
Families/Groups/Scout Troop registrations only receive 1 finger stick, so if you would like to test your mettle separately, be sure to register as individuals!
- Water bottle
- Sturdy, closed-toed shoes
- Compass (one can be provided)
- Food to enjoy afterwards!
Refund Policy:
Westmoreland Sanctuary provides refunds only if the Sanctuary cancels a program or event for any reason. Refunds are not issued for personal reasons related to individuals, families, or groups. If a participant is unable to attend, payment may be reallocated as a donation or applied to another program.
