Tales from the Interns: Mugwort

What is mugwort?

Mugwort is an invasive* species. It is native to Europe and Eastern Asia. It can be identified by its hairy stem and leaves with many blades and a shiny underside. Mugwort has a strong stem which allows it to grow up to 6 feet tall! Many invasive plants like mugwort spread easily as hikers carry its seeds on their clothing which fall along the sides of trails.

How do we protect our ecosystem from Mugwort?

We remove the mugwort by hand to prevent it from spreading. We focus on certain areas of the preserve called "Conservation Islands." These Islands have unique and delicate habitats that need special attention.
